The scientific head supports and supervises student and scientific assistants in their conduct of student research projects and degree dissertations as well as in promotion matters. Moreover, the scientific head advises the boards of the company in scientific and technical issues.

Scientific Director of OWI Oel-Waerme-Instituts is Univ.-Professor Dr.-Ing. Herbert Pfeifer. Furthermore, he is director of the Institute of Industrial Furnaces Engineering at the Faculty of Geo-resources and Materials Technology at RWTH Aachen University.
